Inside America

A French friend recently asked me why Americans are getting so upset with gas prices, as $4 per gallon remains about half the gas prices in France and Europe (mainly because of the very high tax level on gas). Well, I made some research and here’s a clue:

On my right, the best selling car in America is the Ford F-150. A “car” (not sure that truck fits into that category) that is 211 inches long (5.35m), powered by a 4.2-litre V6 engine for the smallest model. The average gas mileage of a Ford F-Series is 14 mpg (16.8 l/100). 588,952 vehicles have been sold in 2007.

On my left, the best selling car in Europe is the Peugeot 207. A car (well, at least it has 4 wheels) that is 155 inches long (4m), powered by a 1.4-litre engine and featuring an average gas mileage of 37 mpg (6.3l/100). 437,505 units have been sold in 2007.

No doubt that filling the 38 gallon tank of an F-150 truck would hurt most of the French too!

Next question is: what do American drivers need to carry around in such a truck that Europeans don’t?

Well, you can equate that with “short man syndrome”. (I think this applies to women as well). You know, those guys who feel small that need a GIGANTIC “car” to feel “manly”. It could be a status symbol as well. They could use them to feel “high and mighty”, to be road-bullies or maybe to piss off the liberals.

The next thing is that some use the excuse that they have to cart around a family with children and need the space. This is where I forgive a bit as most of the US isn’t made for walking with your kids here and there, and the transportation in most areas is hideous. Could it be that people have larger families here? I don’t know. But since I don’t have a large family (just my hubby and I), I cannot really relate.

One more reason that people buy those horse-sized gas-guzzling machines is because they “think” it’s more safe to drive in them as if they collide with another car, the amount of damage done is minimal. So, some buy them as a “defense mechanism”. However, SUV’s aren’t all that safe. They tip over and can get pretty beat up out in the street should there be an accident. Mini-vans are much safer to carry boat-loads of children.

I live in a predominantly Latino area, and I see lots of them with HUGE SUV like cars. I don’t know what they drove back in Mexico… Maybe they’re enjoying the extra space?

It’s a curious issue. But yeah.. if someone’s driving a boat (big car), they really can’t complain all too much, you know? The thing is, though, my husband’s driving a Sudan (medium built car). It was super cheap and we bought it used. And the gas on that is incredibly high for the states.

Keep in mind, we don’t have as many social programs compared to the rest of the world, so that is probably why our gas prices are so cheap here in comparison. So, when Americans complain about high gas prices, they are comparing the gas prices from “the past” and getting upset.

One more reason: many Americans drive crappy and drunk. And you’d be surprised how many people here drive WITHOUT LICENSES! In the ideal world, it’d be nice to drive a tiny tank to avoid the idiots on the road . ;-)

I’ve just recently learned that Canada is complaining about their gas prices going up higher too. I really don’t know what they drive over there, though.

I am hoping for electronic cars for the future – not so much because of global warming, but because if you get into an accident with them, at least it would go on fire. Either that or we should all be driving “bumper cars” lol. I’m sure you’ve already noticed how awfully we drive here.

We need those big trucks for trips to Lowe’s. ;) You try transporting a 4′x8′ sheet of drywall in the back of that Peugeot.

May I ask what type of car you are driving? Is it a Peugeot, or something else?

Good point Susan! I’ve been “americanized” very quickly on that topic and – although it’s not an F150 – I actually drive a mid-sized SUV that’s far too big for me. You bet! 50% economy on gas compared to prices in Paris: I would never afford such a car in France! A bargain, I thought!
Well, now I’m dreaming of a Peugeot as you can imagine ;-)

Another thing to mention is that (from what I see), most of those people complaining about gas prices are those against the Bush administration driving smaller cars. When talking with conservatives, they find the gas prices well justified and are usually the ones telling the liberals to “shut up”.
